 Chitwan, Sept 17: Two-way traffic has resumed on the Prithvi Highway from this morning, 18 days after a section of the road at Krishnabhir was washed away by floods on August 30.
The road became completely obstructed after the flooded Trishuli River eroded its foundation, causing around 100 metres of the highway to collapse.
A new track was opened by cutting through a nearby mound from September 3 to restore vehicular movement.
According to Dhiraj Dhakal, an engineer with the Nagdhunga-Muglin Road Project, West Section, all works were completed by Wednesday evening and the road has been brought into operation from today.
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development had mobilised manpower, equipment and other resources to construct the alternative track and restore traffic.
Vehicles stranded on the road for the past two days were allowed to pass from Wednesday evening, while regular two-way traffic has resumed from today.
With the Krishnabhir section reopened, vehicles that had been partially restricted at Tuinkhola along the Narayangadh–Muglin road section have also been allowed to proceed.
The prolonged closure of Krishnabhir had restricted the movement of large vehicles to and from the federal capital, contributing to a shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Kathmandu.
Around 14,000 vehicles travel along the highway daily.
