Kathmandu, Sept 16: Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment, Geeta Chaudhary, on Wednesday inspected the Korala checkpoint in Mustang district, bordering China, to assess the facilities and procedures for the import and export of agricultural and livestock products.
During the visit, Minister Chaudhary took stock about the trade-related issues including infrastructure requirements and existing procedures with officials at the checkpoint, according to Minister Chaudhary's Secretariat.
Chaudhary also enquired about ways to make the trade of local agricultural products more convenient, organized and effective. The Minister particularly laid her focus on addressing the challenges faced by local farmers and entrepreneurs.
Minister Chaudhary directed the concerned authorities to identify problems affecting the trade of agricultural and livestock products and take necessary measures to facilitate their movement.
She also stressed the need to establish quarantine facilities to ensure the safe and systematic trade and transportation of Chyangra (Himalayan mountain goats), an important livestock commodity in Mustang.
Highlighting importance of maintaining animal health and safety standards, Chaudhary viewed that such measures should be implemented without creating unnecessary hurdles for livestock trade.
She further pointed out the need for effective coordination among the government agencies responsible for the import and export of agricultural and livestock products at the checkpoint.
On the occasion, Minister Chaudhary pledged to take necessary initiatives to enable a more conducive environment for local farmers and entrepreneurs for them to engage in trade more conveniently.
Minister Chaudhary was accompanied by Gandaki Province's Minister for Forest and Environment Namdu Gurung, federal parliamentarian Yogesh Gauchan Thakali and other officials during the inspection.
