Nepal Telecom must be in a state of readiness during disasters: Minister Timilsina
Kathmandu, Nov 2: Minister for Information and Communications, Dr Bikram Timilsina, has stated that Nepal Telecom must be kept in a state of readiness for times of disaster.
Speaking at a program organized today to honour employees who contributed to the rapid restoration of telecommunication services disrupted by the Bhote Koshi floods on August 26, he noted that during disasters, receiving information even five seconds earlier can save lives. He attributed the swift resumption of telecommunication services in the flood-affected areas to the collaboration and coordination among all relevant organizations.
"During the disaster, Telecom employees went above and beyond their duties, which enabled the quick restoration of services in the flood-affected regions. The Ministry of Energy also worked on a war footing to reconstruct energy infrastructure, which further facilitated the restoration of telecommunication services," said Minister Timilsina.
Furthermore, Minister Timilsina expressed his desire to see positive transformations within the Telecom sector, keeping pace with the rapid advancements in technology. He emphasized the need to work towards building a strong, robust, and people-oriented telecommunications entity, noting that this would serve the best interests of all.
Minister Timilsina expressed confidence that by focusing on good governance and organizational strengthening, it would be possible to honour hundreds of employees in the future.
Managing Director of Nepal Telecom, Sangita Pahadi Aryal, explained that while it has been customary to honor high-performing employees during the annual anniversary, this year’s recognition was specifically dedicated to those who contributed to the rapid restoration of services following the Bhote Koshi floods.
The event was chaired by Rajendra Kumar Paudel, Secretary at the Ministry and Chair of the NT Board of Directors.
