Somalia's Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that the extension of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's term by one year, which sparked violent clashes with the opposition, was "unlawful".
The court ruled that constitutional amendments passed by parliament in March, extending the presidential term from four to five years, could not be applied to the current term.
Mohamud announced late Wednesday that he was dismissing the chief justice, claiming there were "concerns... about the need for an efficient and fair judiciary" -- but the dismissal was also rejected by the court.
